Why is Spain the healthiest country in Europe to live in?
According to recent research, Spain is the healthiest country in Europe to live in, and even one of the healthiest countries in the world. The medical journal Lancet has collected data over 20 years showing this. The average life expectancy in Spain is the highest of any country in Europe, at 81.4 years. Spaniards also live longer in good health on average, namely 70.9 years. How come? Why is Spain such a good country to live in for health? I can think of a few reasons.
The Mediterranean Diet
In the first place, I am firmly convinced that what you eat determines your health to a large extent. In Spain people have much healthier eating habits than in the Netherlands. The so-called Mediterranean diet is not a diet, but a lifestyle. Much more fresh fruit and vegetables are used, but also olive oil, (oily) fish, legumes (lentils, chickpeas), nuts… This means less saturated fats, less red meat and fewer preservatives. In short, more foods that promote health and fewer foods that can actually cause illness.
The climate
It is a fact that the climate has a major influence on your mood. It is not without reason that the percentage of depressions in countries with a lot of clouds is above average. I am also strongly influenced by the weather. When I still lived in the Netherlands, I often felt less comfortable in my own skin, for no demonstrable reason. Since I live in Spain, the costa Calida, I hardly suffer from health problems or ailments. The sun on your head makes you feel completely happy right away. And if you feel good mentally, you will feel better physically too. Of course, the vitamin D that you produce through the sun is also very important for healthy bones, which especially the older people benefit from.
Healthcare in Spain
Just a word about health care in Spain. I find this very well arranged. For starters, you don't have to take out expensive insurance here. Public healthcare is free for everyone and that is a relief for your wallet. I myself have only good experiences with health care here. Healthcare staff are generally very professional and committed.
Less stress and more fun
It is well known that stress is bad for health. And what is a good remedy for stress? Just enjoy the little moments, stop every now and then, don't run through life all the time. The Spaniards are very good at this. On a normal working day, you can of course stress a lot to get all your work done on time. But you can also stop and take a breath. First have a nice cup of coffee in a bar before you step into the office. And no quick sandwich at the computer at noon, but just hit the pause button and take the time for a nice long lunch. With a glass of wine? Why not. The Spaniards can enjoy themselves like the best and live day by day. There's nothing wrong with planning for the future, but what counts is today!
In my opinion, these are a number of reasons why Spain is such a healthy country to live in!
